1. IFA Berlin 2006 : what's up Doc?
IFA is
the world's largest Consumer Electronics trade fair
with 1,202 exhibitors from 40 countries (up 16%) and 245,849 participants (2005)
on an exhibition space of 160,000 sqm ; the industry's No. 1 place
for orders, with a volume of 2.5 billion Euros ; a trade fair for both experts
and the public.
Here are some highlights, take a few time to read and you will be able to anticipate the 2007 trends:
Thomson: sound and pictures from another room
Thomson has created a new product line in response to the worldwide demand for the latest Home Cinema accessories. This encompasses a digital video transmitter, digital antenna system, multi-product remote control, modern connecting cables and headphones. The digital multi-media transmitter THOMSON SCENIUM VS990 uses the 5-GHz frequency range for wireless transmission of digital video and audio signals from one room to another. The compact DTUSB405 digital receiver transmits programmes free-to-air via a DVB-T antenna to a PC or laptop.
Mitsubishi: presents HD home cinema projector
Mitsubishi Electric is one of the first companies to offer an LCD projector with full HD resolution, a new top-of-the-range model. With a contrast ratio of 10 000 : 1 and automatic IRIS the HC5000 will guarantee the outstanding viewing pleasure in the home. 3LCD technology enables it to produce a bright and even more realistic, high contrast picture. With a fan that is no louder than 19dB this extremely quiet unit will be available from authorised dealers in October.
Tatung : 42 inch LCD with full HD capability
With its V42EMGI LCD television Tatung is presenting the flagship model from its new LCD series for the first time during the IFA. With a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels this set is fully HD-compatible and also has extremely attractive styling. The contrast ratio is 1000:1 and it has a brightness of 500 cd/m². With a reaction time of 6.5 milliseconds it also guarantees a completely steady picture even when rapid sequences of images are being shown or during the wildest camera tracking, for enhanced enjoyment of Home Cinema. It has been announced that the V42EMGI will be launched on the market in November 2006.
Acer: Compact Home-Cinema projector
Acer got off to a successful start on the consumer electronics market early in 2005 with the first LCD televisions, says Bernd Wulf, Business Unit Manager Consumer Electronics for Acer GmbH. “We expect to derive an additional impetus for further expansion as a result of the current IFA.“ Five new LCD televisions are being exhibited, with screen diagonals of 20 (51 cm) to 42 inches (107 cm). All models are HD-ready and offer excellent value for money. Acer is passing on the savings resulting from the drop in the price of panels directly to its customers, the company emphasises. The Value Line PD100PD, for example, is ideal for Home Cinema or for presentations in smaller rooms. The compact DLP video projector has a resolution of 800 x 600 pixels and a contrast ration of 2.000:1. The brightness is 2.200 ANSI lumen, and it has a noise level of only 31 decibels.
Verbatim: more data in a smaller space
Verbatim is an expert in storage solutions and at the IFA it is demonstrating how increasing amounts of data can be stored on smaller devices. The focus is on the new DVD generation, HD DVD and Blu-Ray dics, as well as the new range of USB and Flash drive storage systems. Blu Ray media are available with a capacity of 25 gigabytes in a single layer structure and ultrahard ScratchGuard+ surfaces. The discs are so well protected agains scratchesan d dirt, such as fingerprints, that the manufacturers no longer need to supply them in a cartridge. The HD DVD media have a maximum storage capacity of 15 gigabytes in a single layer structure. 30 gigabyte dual layer HD DVDs will be available in the fourth quarter of 2006. This exhibitor is also presenting its entire range of mini-DVDs, the new favourite of the camcorder industry.
Sanyo: PLV-Z5 Home Cinema projector
The previous models, the PLV-Z3 and PLV-Z4, are very popular with Home Cinema enthusiasts, and Sanyo has made further advances with its PLV-Z5. Many improvements have been made to the projector, which has a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels and is equipped with 2 HDMI inputs, digital inputs being increasingly in demand as a result of the spread of Blu-ray and HD DVD. Compared with its predecessor, which only has one HDMI port, significant improvements have also been made to the adaptive aperture. The brightness level is 1100 ANSI lumen. There have not been any compromises in terms of user-friendliness either: the Sanyo PLV Z-5 operates at just 22 decibels, making it not only very quiet, it also has an automatic shutter. The recommended price of this lightweight (5 kilogram) projector is 1800 euros.
Sharp: LCD televisions with 65 inch screen diagonals and full HD resolution
With its presentation of an LCD television with screen diagonals of 65 inches and full HD resolution Sharp is certainly among the front runners to see who has the largest LCD screen. In addition, with eight new Aquos LCD TVs, Sharp is extending its range of starter sets for the world of flat screen HD ready television. With screen diagonals of between 80 and 94 centimetres and sets in silver, black-grey, and black there is a suitable model for any surroundings, creating an authentic home cinema atmosphere in any home.
Its new Kameyama 2 factory will now enable Sharp to mass produce large modules for 46 and 52 inch displays. This is the world’s first production plant for eighth generation LC displays. Demand continues to rise and this Japanese company is still a leader in this technology.
“Europe is the market of the future“, said Kleis, pointing out that Europe has accounted for 42 per cent of all LCD sets sold. During the current business year some 18 million LCD televisions have been sold on this continent.
AMD: networking the digital home
AMD is represented at the IFA for the first time and is showing visitors the next stage in the development of consumer electronics. At the centre of the presentation is AMD LIVE!™, a solution for the comprehensive networking of the “digital home“. This involves not only the interaction between PCs and televisions, but also the connection of other digital equipment such as MP3 players, LCD TVs, IPTV, games consoles and mobile phones to computers, and communication between the various items of equipment. In such cases the media PC serves as a multifunctional media centre. From here the content is relayed to the terminals and displayed via set-top boxes. Many of the applications and services being presented in real-time at the IFA can already be downloaded from ”www.amdlive.com“.
Hitachi: hybrid camcorder makes its world debut
On the Hitachi stand at this year’s IFA the emphasis is on the AliS 1080i panels, the first plasma screens with an HD resolution of 1,024 x 1,080 pixels. The company’s flagship series, the 9000 with digital receiver, and the basic HD units, the 8000 series, operate with this panel. It can show up to five per cent more picture that the usual HD panels and also provides a sharper image than its predecessors. With its LCD televisions Hitachi is using its new alpha IPS Pro technology, giving faster reaction times and a wider viewing angle. According to the company the two hybrid cam models, DVHS301 and DVHS303, are a world first and are being presented to the public for the first time at the IFA. In addition to a Super Multi+ DVD drive the two camcorders are also equipped with an eight gigabyte hard drive.
JVC: numerous innovations
JVC is presenting a whole raft of innovations on a much larger stand area than last year. Highlights include a full-HD home cinema projector, due to be launched in 2007, and the world’s largest HD Hybrid-TV system, with a 110 inch screen, which is currently only available as a prototype. Among the smaller back projection models with 56 and 70 inch screen diagonals the HD-ready sets are already on the market, to be followed by Full-HD versions in the next few weeks. Other new items include an HD-compatible, 46 inch LCD television set and two micro-systems with or without a CD player-television which have been specially designed for use with the iPod, but can also be used with all other MP3 players. Breaking new ground is the first Full-HD camcorder, available next year.
Telefunken: a wireless flat screen television
According to Telefunken this recently introduced digital 5.2 GHz wireless flat screen television is a European first. Its wireless technology dispenses with the need to set up this 37, 42 or 50 inch HD-ready TV set near other CE devices. These models from the new product range can be mounted on a wall without obstruction from dangling leads. Not having any wiring connections means that they can be moved from room to room, or onto a balcony or patio. The 5.2 GHz operating frequency makes the wireless system resistant to interference and signal loss, which often occurs with less sophisticated wireless technology working at lower frequencies. This product range uses a patented wireless protocol and chipset from ViXS Systems, the perfect wireless TV system for home cinema, DVD players, satellite and terrestrial receivers.
Sonic: downloading and copying premium content
With Roxio Venue, Sonic Solutions® is presenting comprehensive media applications. It enables movies or music tracks that have been obtained online to be selected, displayed and copied securely onto DVD-RW, and then played on standard DVD players or computers. Roxio Venue is based on a new kind of technology from Sonic, supporting the recording of entertainment media such as movies and music tracks. It uses the CSS copying protection for commercial DVDs. In addition to the secure downloading and copying of premium content, Roxio Venue also provides facilities for high quality internet videos, DVD playback and a media manager for the rapid organising and accessing of entertainment material.
Nero: focus on the digital lifestyle
The Nero stand at the IFA is focusing on various solutions and applications from the company, all of which are intended to promote a “digital lifestyle“. These include in particular the Nero Digital™, an audio and video technology based entirely on the MPEG-4 standard. This fully HDTV-compatible technology enables digital content to be transformed with just a few clicks of a mouse. Various Nero applications are available to enable media data to be converted into the Nero digital format. In the “Mobile Zone“ on the stand attention is focused in particular on the new Nero Mobile application. Here visitors can examine the latest software for the Digital Media Center on a number of different terminals, including PDA, PSP, XDA and MDA. Nero Mobile enables digital video, audio and photo files to be taken anywhere, any time.
Marantz: full HD-DLP projector for unprecedented detail on the screen
Marantz, recognised as a maker of high quality home cinema products for a demanding clientele with a proper appreciation of quality, is exhibiting its fully HD-DLP projector, the VP-11S1 (15,000 euros), which can reproduce HD material to the highest resolution. The Marantz stand has its own home cinema where visitors can experience for themselves that this projector can clearly show the smallest details on the screen. The DV9600 DVD player (1,999 euros) provides outstanding reproduction of DVDs at 1080p, the highest HD resolution. The Marantz Superaudio CD player and EISA winner SA7001 is a real treat for the ears of audio enthusiasts.
Toshiba: presenting its HD DVD player for Europe
In 2006 Toshiba Europe GmbH has almost trebled the size of its stand to 2,900 square metres. “We deliberately decided to have a much larger display area at this year’s IFA“, said Klaus-Dieter Dahl, General Manager Consumer Products. Not only is this an ideal way of presenting an impressive portfolio of products but also of illustrating the growth that has been achieved in recent years and of showing, in an ‘unequivocal’ way that we intend to continue our success with innovative new developments“. Among Toshiba’s exhibits at this year’s fair are its first two HD-DVD players for the European market, which will be available in November and December for between 599 and 699 euros and 899 to 999 euros respectively. A notebook computer from the Qosmio range is also on show, as a 4-in-1 multimedia concept with a HD DVD-ROM drive, LCD television reception, virtual Surround-Sound and all the usual PC functions.
Philips: announces it is entering the sat-nav business
Next year Philips Consumer Electronics will be launching its own range of sat-nav products, CEO Rudy Provoost announced. Four million of these units were sold worldwide last year, and by 2008 demand is expected to increase to some 16 million. Since 60 per cent of them are sold through consumer electronics dealers, Philips believe that this is the ideal platform. Provoost also announced an increased commitment by his company to the field of Voice over IP communication, which is expected to see its share of the world market rise from 1.5 to 20 per cent over the next three years. A new Skype telephone is therefore being shown at the IFA, which operates even if the PC or laptop is not turned on. With its television sets Philips continues to promote its series fitted with “Ambilight“ background lighting. Sales are expected to pass the one million mark during 2006, and will have a value of almost one billion euros. A new addition to the range, initially only available on the American market, is a portable media player, which combines a DVR and MP3 player in one unit and can store up to eight hours of television programmes.
Panasonic: presents the world’s largest plasma flat screen
The Panasonic display at the IFA includes a plasma flat screen television with diagonals of 103 inches (261 centimetres), making it the world’s largest. It is expected to come onto the market before the end of the year at a cost of around 80,000 euros (plus value-added tax). The company is concentrating on the use of plasma technology for its large screens. According to a Synovate study conducted in Germany, France and the United Kingdom, 56 per cent of those questioned expressed an immediate preference for plasma TV. A comparative test revealed that 73 per cent of those who took part were convinced that this technology provides a superior picture quality, according to Fabien Roth, TV Group Manager for Panasonic Marketing Europe. This year the company plans to double production of plasma sets to four million units and is expecting the highest growth rates to be in Europe. For smaller screen formats Panasonic uses LCDs with the “IPS-Alpha panel“, developed in-house, to produce a wider angle of view.
Blu-ray: making a start with the Sony Playstation 3 and numerous movies
The launch of the new Sony Playstation 3 with the Blu-ray drive on 17 November is also expected to assist this new storage medium to finally make its long-awaited breakthrough in Germany. By the end of this year some four million of these units will be available, with two million being delivered to Europe by next March, according to Nick Sharples, Director of Communication for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, at the IFA. A number of other manufacturers are also presenting their first Blu-ray players and recorders. At the same time the leading video leasing companies intend to bring a large number of feature films out in the Blu-ray format announced spokesmen for 20th Century Fox, Warner Home Video, Paramount and Sony Pictures. Highlights will include the exclusive director’s cut of “Kingdom of Heaven” with a total playing time of three hours and 42 minutes, according to a representative of 20th Century Fox speaking at the IFA. During the IFA the Blu-ray Disc Association welcomed Sun Microsystems as a new member of the organisation’s Board of Directors. On their combined stand in Hall 26 the member firms presented the various different applications for Blu-ray technology.
Media in transition
According to Gerhard Schaas, Chairman, Deutsches TV-Plattform (DTVP), not only consumer electronics but the entire media sector is in a “period of transition“. “During the next few years we will experience the most far-reaching changes in the media landscape since the introduction of colour television some 40 years ago“, he stated at the DTVP press conference during the opening day of the IFA. This has been triggered by digitalisation which, contrary to initial plans, is not only a new technology for improving the transmission of television signals. Digitalisation now affects all areas of the media industry and is leading to a gradual merging of consumer electronics with telecommunications and mobile radiotelephony. And Schaas continued: “New programmes are being created, including interactive applications. Terrestrial services are experiencing a renaissance and enabling television reception to go mobile. With HDTV the cinema can be recreated in the living room. IPTV is a completely new form of television, and home networking is imminent too.“
HD-DVD: European launch of “Mission Impossible III“
The competition between the two new storage technologies due to be launched on the European market in November is very evident at the IFA. One day after the Bluray Association, on Friday the HD DVD Promotion Group also presented its available film programme. The French StudioCanal announced the release of ten titles, including Basic Instinct and Rambo I to III. By March of next year a further 15 feature films are due for release. Warner Home Video will be bringing out Goodfellas and Lethal Weapon. By the end of the year at least 15 titles will be released in Europe and then, as in the USA, between eight and ten titles will appear each month. The eleven titles from Universal include Apollo 13 and Van Helsing. In November Paramount will be releasing Mission Impossible III simultaneously on DVD and HD DVD as well as offering the entire trilogy as a set using the new technology. After the market leader Sony had chosen Bluray for its Playstation 3, Microsoft is offering an HD-DVD Player as an upgrade for its Xbox 360. “HD DVD represents a quantum leap in the way in which consumer films and other high definition programmes can be viewed“, said Yoshihide Fujii, President and CEO of Toshiba Media Network Company and Chairman of the HD DVD Promotion Group.
Daewoo: wireless HDTV throughout the home
Taking as its the slogan “Design meets Technology“ this year at the IFA the Daewoo Electronics display is dominated by its advanced televisions. The new “More Contrast“ plasma sets have a contrast ratio of 8000 : 1 or 10 000 : 1 and, like the TFT LCDs they too are “HD ready“. Daewoo has also improved its traditional tube technology and given the sets a brand new look. The NeoSlim series are distinguishable by having a very short picture tube and occupy far less space than conventional models. Also on show are TV sets with built-in DVB-T tuners, DVD recorders and set-top boxes. With its designs for a new generation of set-top boxes for WLAN applications the company is presenting a system for relaying and receiving high resolution video signals throughout the house, enabling pictures in HDTV quality to be viewed on various sets in different rooms without the need for cables.
Loewe: LCD television sets that can be configured individually
“Three quarters of our range is less than one year old“, stated Dr. Rainer Hecker, Chairman of the Board of Loewe AG. The company’s presentation at this year’s IFA is centred around the ”Individual Compose“ series. With its Individual Compose 40 and 46 this German manufacturer of premium brands has extended its successful “Individual“ product line to include an outstanding Home Cinema concept. The design and the technology of both of Loewe’s large, high resolution LCD-TV sets with Full-HD panels can be configured individually. Together with a sound system that has been individually developed for the Individual Compose from Loewe, a top-of-the-range modular, flexible and individual Home Cinema system has been created. It ranges from the traditional 3.1 version with stereo spatial sound to the de luxe 5.1 Dolby Surround version. The appearance of the new audio components has been coordinated to match the Individual family of products. A built-in HDTV receiver will soon be included as standard equipment on these television sets, together with a built-in hard drive for HDTV and digital TV recordings, a USB port for connecting digital storage media and two HDTV ports.
2. Hardware: Intel Dual Core Vs. AMD Dual Core
This month, ExtremeTech.com has publish a very good and useful processor comparison:
Intel
Core 2 Duo Vs. AMD X2 AM2--Top to Bottom »
On our side, we've just completed their Video Encode Scaling chart with the CPU prices:

So it may help you in choosing your new computer, however, we recommend Athlon 64 to anticipate Windows Vista 64 upgrade.
Particularly since, Micorsoft Senior Program Manager Steve Riley announced at Sydney that Microsoft cuts full HD playback in 32bit Vista goes! (From apcstart.com news).
“This is a decision that the Media Player folks made because there are just too many ways right now for unsigned kernel mode code [to compromise content protection]. The media companies asked us to do this and said they don’t want any of their high definition content to play in x32 at all, because of all of the unsigned malware that runs in kernel mode can get around content protection, so we had to do this,” he said.
And our own DVDx 64-bit testing shows that 64-bit encoding is 25% faster, Athlon 64 Dual Core will make your future better than Intel x32 Dual Core.
3. Home TV : LocationFree, a nice toy from Sony
LocationFree(TM) offers a completely new way of watching TV. Instead of going
to the television set, the TV comes to you by redirecting your local TV shows
to wherever you are, even if you don't have a TV with you.
With LocationFree(TM), you can watch live TV, play back recorded programmes and even set up future recordings, all from a PC, laptop or PSP(TM) (PlayStation® Portable) system. Built-in wireless technology gives you the freedom of your own home (and garden), and the Internet does the rest.
The heart of the system is the LocationFree Base Station. The process of using
the Base Station over the Internet is called NetAV. In the home, the Base Station
uses proprietary Sony technology, including an optimised dual-band antenna
and custom software, to ensure the best possible wireless performance. When
the Base Station is accessed remotely over the Internet a free Dynamic DNS
(Domain Name Server) service ensures that periodic changes to a user's global
IP never prevent connection to the Base Station. Once a connection is established,
user privacy is ensured by a combination of security measures. Industry-standard
Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) encryption is bolstered by WiFi Protected Access
(WPA), which improves on the authentication and encryption offered by WEP.
Its Dynamic VBR technology allows the Base Station to monitor the available bandwidth of the broadband connection and automatically optimise the bit-rate of the AV stream for the best possible picture quality.
Wherever
you go, your home entertainment will follow:
- connect up to 2 video sources to the LocationFree Base Station (TV, DVB, DVD, Tivo etc...)
- install LocationFree Player software on your PC (or PSP)
- watch the video on your PC from anywhere at home thru WiFi
- watch the home video on your Laptop from anywhere world-wide thru an Internet Web ADSL connection
